GAN V100 MagLev vs Leap: Which Version Makes More Sense?

Same V100 family, different reasons to buy. The MagLev has the spring-free tensioning system; the Leap uses springs and brings its own Year of the Horse styling.
I’d choose the Leap for value.
If you want a GAN without paying extra specifically for MagLev, the Leap is the one I’d start with. If MagLev is on your wish list, buy the MagLev version and choose the surface you prefer.
That is a more useful distinction than assuming the more expensive option will improve your times.
MagLev
Repelling ring magnets replace the tensioning springs.
Leap
A spring-based GES setup in the Year of the Horse edition.
Your finish
MagLev: UV or frosted. The Leap here: frosted.
The differences that matter
| Feature | V100 MagLev | V100 Leap |
|---|---|---|
| Tensioning | MagLev ring magnets | Spring-based GES system |
| Size | 55 mm | 55 mm |
| Surface choices here | UV coated or frosted | Frosted |
| Edition shown | Black-internal MagLev models | Year of the Horse, orange internals |
| Adjustment | GAN specifies 72 tuning combinations | Spring-based setup; use its supplied instructions |
Both are magnetic cubes. MagLev replaces the tensioning springs with repelling magnets; Leap keeps springs. Neither design makes lubrication, setup or your turning style irrelevant.
My value pickGAN V100 Leap
The Year of the Horse edition pairs a frosted surface with orange internals. I’d pick it for the spring-based setup and distinctive look, especially as a first GAN.

For the MagLev setupGAN V100 MagLev UV
The spring-free tensioning system with a glossy UV-coated surface. This is my choice when both MagLev and that finish are part of the appeal.

How much adjustment do you actually need?
GAN’s 72 combinations describe the MagLev model’s available settings, not 72 performance levels. More combinations give you more ways to set it up; they do not tell you which setting will suit your hands.
I’d keep the factory setup for the first few sessions. Then change one setting at a time. If a cube feels too loose, work on the setup before deciding you need a different model.
The Leap extras are part of its appeal
GAN lists a themed bag, Year of the Horse stickers, tuning tools and a manual with the Leap edition. The MagLev package uses a GAN storage box with its tools and manual. The selected product listing shows the package you are ordering.
My take
Buy the Leap because you like what it offers, not as a placeholder until you can afford something else. Buy the MagLev because you want its tensioning system or UV finish. I would not replace a V100 I already enjoyed simply to swap springs for magnets.
Before you choose
Is Leap a smart cube?
No. The V100 Leap is a conventional magnetic speed cube, not a connected smart cube.
Is the MagLev automatically faster?
No. MagLev removes spring friction from the tensioning system, but solve times depend on the complete setup and the solver. Choose the features you want rather than a promised time improvement.
