GAN 17 MagDrive vs GAN 16 MagLev Max: Which Should You Buy?

GAN 17 MagDrive vs GAN 16 MagLev Max: Which Should You Buy?

GAN flagship comparison

Choosing your next GAN? The 17 brings a redesigned magnetic system, but the 16 Max still has plenty to offer. Here is what matters before you pick one.

The short answer

Buying new? I’d start with the GAN 17.

If you are choosing between these two and their prices are close, I’d put the GAN 17 MagDrive first on the shortlist. Its redesigned magnetic system is the main reason to choose it. The GAN 16 Max makes sense if you already enjoy its response or find it at a better price.

Already own a 16 Max you love? There is no rush. Think about what you want your next cube to do differently before you replace a setup that works.

What changes with MagDrive?

The GAN 17 is not simply a 16 Max with a few extra magnets. Its compact 20-magnet micro core sits at the heart of a redesigned system that uses attraction and repulsion to guide each turn.

The 16 Max already has magnets working across its inner, middle and outer regions. With the 17, the interesting part is how GAN has changed that interaction throughout the turn.

MagDrive vs MagLev: what is the difference?

MagLev replaces conventional compression springs with repelling magnets. MagDrive is the name of the GAN 17’s magnetic-drive system. Both cubes use MagLev, so choosing the 17 does not mean switching away from magnetic tensioning.

Why does the 16 Max sometimes say 124 magnets?

The 124 figure describes its magnetic network. Include the 12 MagLev ring magnets and the total becomes 136. That is why you may see both numbers used for the Max.

What do owners say about the feel?

Some cubers want a more guided turn. Others prefer a looser response. These two comments from r/Cubers show why the choice is not the same for everyone.

Community feedback

A case for the GAN 17

Reddit user u/Economy-Pudding-3100 found the 17 more stable than their 16 Max, with fewer lockups. They still saw it as a gradual improvement rather than an essential upgrade, and felt the Max remained a good choice.

A reason to keep the 16 Max

Reddit user u/Brytesilver found the 17 controllable but preferred the looser feel of their 16 Max when using the 17’s stronger corner-to-core magnets. They had not tried the other magnetic strengths yet.

My take? The 17 is worth a look if you want a different magnetic response. But if the Max already feels right in your hands, that is a good reason to keep it. Lube, tension and magnet settings can make a real difference to which one you prefer.

If you get a chance to try both, run a familiar algorithm and a few double flicks. Pay attention to how easily you finish turns and whether you keep overshooting. You will learn more from that than from watching either cube spin freely.

Make the setup your own

Both cubes give you six centre-travel settings and twelve tension settings, making 72 combinations before you explore the magnetic adjustments. There is plenty of room to experiment on either model.

Keep it simple when you start:

  1. Note your starting settings. You can always go back if you prefer the original setup.
  2. Pick one thing to improve. Is the cube too loose, too quick, or too strongly magnetic for your taste?
  3. Change one setting at a time. Keep equivalent adjustments consistent across the cube.
  4. Do a few familiar solves. Look for comfortable, repeatable turning rather than one lucky fast solve.

Follow the instructions for your specific model when changing magnetic rods. The same setting number on two different cubes does not necessarily produce the same feel.

Which one should you buy?

For a new purchase, I’d lean towards the GAN 17 when the price gap is small. It gives you the redesigned magnetic system and plenty of tuning options to explore. If the 16 Max has a substantial discount, or you already know you prefer its feel, it can be the better buy for you.

If you already own a 16 Max, ask yourself what you want to change. More magnetic guidance? A different turning response? Or do you simply enjoy trying new flagship cubes? All are useful starting points. You do not need to replace a main that still works well for you.

A few quick answers

Is GAN 17 MagDrive still a MagLev cube?

Yes. It uses MagLev tensioning. MagDrive refers to its magnetic-drive system, so the two names describe different parts of the cube.

Is the GAN 17 worth upgrading to from the 16 Max?

It is worth considering if you want to explore the redesigned magnetic response. If you are happy with your 16 Max, I would spend time tuning it before deciding you need a replacement.

Does the GAN 16 Max have 124 or 136 magnets?

Its network has 124 magnets. The total is 136 when you include the twelve MagLev ring magnets.

Will the GAN 17 make me faster?

A cube that suits your turning can help you feel more comfortable and consistent. Faster averages still depend on practice, technique and a setup you enjoy using.

Which one should I choose for more control?

The 17 is worth considering if you want to explore a different magnetic response, and some owners report good controllability. Both cubes have extensive adjustments. Start with whether you want less overshooting, a firmer feel or more noticeable alignment.

Can CuberShop help me choose?

Yes. Tell us your current cube and what you would like to change about it. If you are unsure about an accessory or package option, ask us before placing your order.
